Hello fellow peers,
I'm Juan and I just wanted to share my experience with holistic health from a recovery perspective. I have learned that medication is a small party in recovery when dealing with mental illness and addiction. For years I chose, (perhaps unwillingly through my illness) to drink/drug, be involved with crime, and live a unhealthy lifestyle ; all while lacking any spiritual connection. I looked at myself as a cursed bi-polar soul. I was my illness. I had isolated myself and constantly lost great relationships. It was my excuse to give up. I was not the me I knew. I gave up hope on regaining myself, and I considered that person gone. I claimed my illness and let it take control of me instead of me controlling it. Today, I have a completely different story, and I owe it all to holistic health.
In the Solution for Wellness program by Lilly USA, LLC, a free program that I implemented in group sessions as an Advanced Peer Specialist at Dallas Metro Care, It states the following about physical activity :
" People with mental illness may have challenges in getting enough physical activity. A few of these challenges may be:
1. Symptoms: • Anxiety • Being withdrawn • Depression • Psychosis
2. Lifestyle: • Low income
• Less access to gyms and activities
3. Medication Side Effects: • Drowsiness or sleepiness "
In my experience I have found that these same symptoms also intervene with all aspects of recovery. I hope that many of you consider looking at holistic healing as option for your recovery. Here you will find links that focus on support and good relationships, food, exercise, stress and relaxation, exercise, and activities.
With love for freedom and recovery,
Juan Johnson
